We only accept work from people of colour.

Ashamed publishes personal essays, opinion pieces, historical investigations and pieces about film, music and politics. We also accept creative writing, art and photography!

Ashamed is a volunteer-led publication, we earn very little money, so most of the work you do for the magazine and website will be unpaid. We are working on changing this. Stay tuned for updates.

All we can offer you right now is experience, and a platform to openly express yourself.

Please pitch before you submit fully written pieces.

PITCHING GUIDELINES:

  • INTRODUCE YOURSELF & PLEASE INCLUDE PRONOUNS (if comfortable).

  • Your pitch should have a title.

  • Your pitch shouldn’t be very long (a detailed paragraph is best).

  • Your pitch should explain your piece, from start to finish.

  • Your pitch/ piece should be original. 

  • Pitching guidelines are the same for creative writing and poetry.

  • We tend not to restrict what kind of material people submit, as we believe in creative freedom, but please note that we are a feminist publication, so a feminist angle is encouraged. Additionally, we would like to publish more in-depth film and music essays. Do you critically analyse movies and tv? Do you have a powerful memory connected to a song? We want to hear it!

  • We also accept historical investigations. We encourage historical writings about people of colour, the LGBTQ+ community, feminist history, socialist history, and everything in between about those in the margins of society. If your pitch is accepted: 

  • Your writing should NOT exceed 2000 words

Please send us the pictures you would like attached to your piece (HD pictures please) - we can find pictures if you can not. Along with this, attach links to where you found the images.

PHOTOS/ILLUSTRATIONS:

  • We accept photography and illustration submissions - but they must come with a 300 word write up.
