BLK PWR MAGAZINE

BLK PWR MAGAZINE

£5.00

For Black History Month in collaboration with Wessex Scene, we created a Black History Month print magazine featuring the work of all black creators. In this magazine, you will read articles about the need and necessity for prison abolition, not prison reform. You will read stories about Black beauty and Feminism, poems about films and whiteness, the white saviour complex, spaces, places and being enough, the forgotten black soldiers of WW1, the commodification of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Blackfishing, the history and importance of the Notting Hill Carnival and the history of racial justice movements beyond the United States. Finally, you will read about our dreams and aspirations for a better world. A lot of people think creating separate spaces for minorities creates further division, but it doesn’t. Creating separate spaces for marginalised people to express themselves allows us to not be spoken over and to share our different stories. As marginalised people, we know society wasn’t designed for us, that we are merely an afterthought. But in this magazine, in this space, we are the forethought, always.

The money raised from this issue will be going to Free Black Uni. They aim to decolonise education and deliver open access online lectures exploring radical and transformation topics, build an online library of radical readings and much more. We deserve education that is anti-colonial, understanding, free and accessible. Free Black University is working to provide that. We are also hoping to be able to provide contributors with compensation through sales!
