ISSUE 2: 70'S DREAM

Hi all! Long time no speak. Happy New year and all that. I hope January is being kind to you all <3

Ashamed is back and ready to make another zine. We want this one to be massive. Physically and spiritually massive! But we need your help. We need your submissions!

In this issue, we are exploring the 70s in all its sin and glory. The 70s is a time that is heavily romanticised. Those who didn’t even witness the evolution of style or the horror movie genre in this era feel a strong nostalgia and longing for those days.

Fashion and trend expert Cicli E Ricicli Della Moda argues that “Cycles and recycles are a common thing in fashion and they happen in precise moments, usually every fifteen years. Always in different ways but nonetheless inspired to a particular era.”

We have clearly taken aspects from the 70s (particularly in clothing and things of an aesthetical nature) and reinvented them. Unfortunately, we tend to have a watered-down view of decades and eras due to idealisation and our general tendency to recall positive memories over negative ones. As a result, we can distort the past.

We want this zine to be an archival project. It is not a zine that just shows what we thought the 70s were like, but what it was honestly like for those who grew up in that era. Those who went to gigs in that era, prom, had crushes, wrote love letters and diary entries. We want to know the stories of our parents and our grandparents. We want to know their truth, their teenage hood and adulthood.

Please submit:

ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS: Conversations between your parents / grandparents / aunts & uncles

  • This can be interviewed about iconic gigs they went to / film screenings / an important relationship they had at the time / the evolution of beauty and fashion standards and what that meant to them / social justice movements they participated in.

PHOTOGRAPHY: from the 70s

  • We would love scans of yourself/ your parents/ relatives from that period - perhaps with a story attached to them? A first relationship/ trip to camp/ a family picture or prom photographs.

  • We can track beauty and fashion trends through this also!

CREATIVE WRITING: Short fictional stories

  • Do you have a fictional story about the 70’s you’d like to share? Think Daisy and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Letters/ writings/ diary enters:

  • Scan letters/ diary enters / playlists you made for a special someone (a best pal/ a partner/ anything!). What was going on inside your brain at this time? We want to know!

Historical research / Media analysis on the 70s:

  • Do you have a particular opinion on the Vogue covers from the 70s? Or thoughts about the women in the music from this era (Joni Mitchell, Donna Summer, Karen Carpenter, Gloria Gaynor?), The horror genre? Subcultures (Disco etc.), Gender, masculinity and clothing? We have a very Americanised understanding of the 70s, but what was the 70s like for those who didn’t live in the United States?

Art / Collage / Illustrations:

  • All art about the 70s is welcome! If you’re interested in making art for us, please get in touch!

Submissions will be open from: 8th of Jan - 28th of Feb 2022. We accept work from people of colour only.

Submit to: ashamedmagazine@gmail.com.
